Shannon M. Huttinger
October 31, 1962 - December 31, 2021
Shannon M. Huttinger was taken home to heaven in the arms of his Lord Jesus on December 31, 2021, after an illness. Shannon was born October 31, 1962 in Elyria, OH to Donald and Jeannine Huttinger. Left parentless at a young age, he developed a strong sense of independence and determination, working on a farm while finishing high school and then working full time while attending Cleveland State University, attaining his engineering degree in 1992. A talented mechanical engineer, he worked on many projects in the Cleveland area, including designing giant shredding machines, a system to fold and move newspapers between printing presses, and medical building ceilings with special struts that allow the use of suspended x-ray machines and other equipment. Free time for Shannon meant the chance to spend time with his friends, build his own projects at the “Man Cave”, brewing beer, cruising estate sales, making sausage, going to the German Club, fishing expeditions on Lake Erie, and attending gun shows. He especially enjoyed trips with “the guys” to the annual machine gun shoot in Knob Creek, Kentucky, and the journeys to Germany with his best friend. Open-hearted, kind, generous, and genuinely interested in people, Shannon made friends easily and was always ready to help someone in whatever way he could. His engineering mind was quick to develop solutions to most any problem. He had strong convictions, a deep faith, and a wonderful sense of humor that made knowing him a joy. Shannon met the love of his life during Christmas vacation in 2014, and after a long-distance courtship found himself transplanted from Cleveland to Michigan’s Thumb. There, while working full time as a mechanical engineer at a firm in Bad Axe, he devoted himself to his new role of Husband and Head of the Homestead, cherishing his bride with excellent cooking, repairing anything that broke, building anything that was needed, flowers for no reason, warming up the vehicle every wintery morning, solving problems with that brilliant mind of his, and all the protection and partnership that a true Christian man brings to a marriage. Shannon leaves behind his wife, Sue Huttinger and her daughter Jennifer VanDyke, honorary parents Larry and Gail Whitman, honorary brother Mike Whitman, mother-in-law Patt VanDyke, brothers-in-law Bruce VanDyke, Bert (Carly) VanDyke, nephews Christian VanDyke and Aiden VanDyke, and father-in-law Bert VanDyke, along with many friends who will greatly miss him. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2022 at 11 am at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bad Axe. Shannon’s family will receive guests for visitation on Saturday at the church from 10 am until the service time at 11 am.
